History of Zip Code Day

Zip Code Day celebrates the invention of 5 digit code within the United States of America during 1983. Creator of the day remains unknown. Zip code is believed to be evolved from the postal district numbers or postal zone numbers which were used since the 1900s to help the carriers reach the right place quickly. Postal codes were started to be used by many major cities by the end of World War II. Zip codes were first found by Henry Bentley Hahn, Sr., a postal inspector who was later made practical by J. Edward, Postmaster General. In 1962, the post office department announced the zip code system to the public and they introduced a character called Mr Zip to motivate people to use the codes. Since 1967, the post office made the usage of zip codes mandatory for bulk mailers. The ZIP+4 introduced in 1984 was furthermore superior.
