History of World Teacher’s Day
World Teacher’s Day or International Teacher’s Day was first celebrated on October 5, 1994. The International Teacher’s Day is a tribute to the teachers, and it acknowledges their contributions to the field of education and development. Teachers are the pillar of the support for any nation-building. The contributions of the teachers to their local community and global society are extensive in number. The celebration of the day aims in mobilizing the support for the teachers. It also honours the teachers and their role in providing an excellent education at all levels. International Teacher’s Day enables the children and the adults to take part in the celebration.
The representatives of UNESCO and International Labour Organization signed “Recommendation concerning the Status of Teachers” on October 5, 1966. They closed Special Intergovernmental Conference on the Status of Teachers in Paris, France on this day. The UNESCO’s 29th session of the General Conference was opened on October 12, 1997. “Recommendation concerning the Status of Higher Education Teaching Personnel” was adopted during this conference, on November 11, 1997. The first World Teachers’ Day was held on October 5, 1994. Since then, the celebration has been organized each year on the same date. Education International (EI) firmly believes that World Teachers’ Day should be internationally recognized and celebrated around the world. EI on every year launches a public awareness campaign to highlight the contributions of the teaching profession. More than 100 countries are observing the World Teachers’ Day.
Earlier to this World Teacher’s Day, various countries around the world have been celebrating the national teacher’s day. Teacher’s Day in most countries marks the contribution of any famed educator or the person of educational repute. In almost all the countries worldwide, the Teachers’ Day is celebrated with children, students, and pupils. They take this day an opportunity to present gifts and flowers as a token of appreciation to their beloved teachers. The regular scholastic routine monotony is broken in this day, and several events or games will be conducted to make the day special for the teachers.
