World Parkinson’s Day
World Parkinson’s Day is celebrated on April 11 of every year. The day marks the birthday of Dr. J. Parkinson. On this day, several efforts are taken to raise the awareness of the Parkinson disease and to praise the several things which are made by World Organisations to eradicate that disease. Hence World Parkinson’s Day is a perfect day to raise awareness among the peoples about the Parkinson’s disease.
“The moment I understood this – that my Parkinson’s was the one thing I was not going to change – I started looking at the things I could change, like the way research is funded.” – Michael J. Fox
History of World Parkinson’s Day
The World Parkinson’s Day marks the birthday of Dr James Parkinson, London, who systematically described the six individuals with the symptoms of Parkinson Disease. He explained the Parkinson’s Disease in “An Essay on the Shaking Palsy” by describing the three of his patients and the three persons who he saw in the street. He referred to the disease that would later bear his name as “paralysis agitans” or “shaking palsy,” and further he distinguished between resting tremors and the tremors with motion. Before 60years, Jean-Martin Charcot named the term “Parkinson’s Disease.” Parkinson’s disease is a degenerative disorder of the central nervous system, which mainly affects the motor system. The early symptoms of this disease are shaking, slowness of movement, difficulty in walking. The other symptoms like behaviour problems and thinking may also occur. Other minor symptoms are sleep, sensory and emotional problems.
