National Loving Day
National Loving Day is celebrated on June 12 of every year. National Loving Day commemorated the date in history when the Supreme Court of America ruled to disband all anti-miscegenation laws in 1967 (legislation that made mixed-race marriages illegal). National Loving Day is not an officially recognized holiday by the U.S. government, but there was a movement to persuade U.S. President Barack Obama to make it so. Loving Day is the biggest multiracial festival in the United States of America.
“My trust in God flows out of the experience of his loving me, day in and day out, whether the day is stormy or fair, whether I’m sick or in good health, whether I’m in a state of grace or disgrace. He comes to me where I live and loves me as I am.” – Brennan Manning
History of National Loving Day
The “Loving” side of the U.S. Supreme Court case involves married Mildred Loving (née Jeter), a woman of African and Rappahannock descent, and Richard Loving, a white man. They first met when he was 17, and she was 11. He was a family friend, and they dated for few years. After she had become pregnant, they become married when she was 18. Reportedly, he did not realize that interracial marriage was illegal, and they were arrested in few weeks after they returned to their hometown. They pleaded with the guilty to charges of “cohabiting as man and wife, against the peace and dignity of the Commonwealth,” and avoided the jail by agreeing to leave Virginia. The Lovings moved to Washington, D.C., and began legal action by writing to the U.S. Attorney General Robert F. Kennedy. The Kennedy referred the case to the Union of American Civil Liberties. After the Warren Court unanimously ruled for the young couple, they returned to Virginia, where they lived with their three children. Richard Loving had died in a car accident in 1975. On May 5, 2008, Mildred Loving died at the age of 68. On every June 12, the anniversary of the ruling, National Loving Day events around the country mark the advances of mixed-race couples.
