International Jazz Day

International Jazz Day or Jazz Day is celebrated on April 30 of every year. The International Jazz Day celebrates the historical, cultural, and educational contribution to Jazz Music. The day mainly aims at spreading the awareness about this unique musical style, and to promote the cultural, and social values which Jazz stands for.

Normally, things are viewed in these little-segmented boxes. There’s classical, and then there’s jazz; romantic, and then there’s baroque. I find that very dissatisfying. I was trying to locate the thread that connects one type of music – one type of musician – to another, and to follow that thread in some natural, evolutionary way.” – Jerry Lee Lewis

History of International Jazz Day

UNESCO (United Nations Education, Scientific, and Cultural Organization) designed the International Jazz Day to celebrate the virtues of jazz as an educational tool, and a force for peace, unity, dialogue and enhanced cooperation among people. The Day was proclaimed during the UNESCO General Conference in November 2011. Irina Bokova, UNESCO Director-General and Herbie Hancock, UNESCO Goodwill Ambassador kicked off the first annual International Jazz Day in Paris. The International Jazz Day brings together the communities, artists, schools, historians, academics, and jazz enthusiasts all over the world to celebrate and learn more about the jazz music. And also to raise awareness of the need for intercultural dialogue and mutual understanding, and reinforce international cooperation and communication.
